CLINT SMITH SCORES ROME SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER CHECKERS
Rome, GA (May 29, 2011) – Clint Smith grabbed the lead on lap six and led the final twenty-four laps en route to the win in Rome International Speedways’ 2011 Season Opener on Sunday Night in front of a standing-room only crowd.
Casey Roberts led the field down for the start of the race after setting fast time with a lap of 13.988 seconds around the ½ mile red clay oval.
Roberts jumped to the point at the start of the thirty-lap feature event, followed closely by Smith.
Smith would see his chance to grab the top spot sliding by Roberts in turn two to grab the point, something he would never relinquish.
Roberts would ride along in second with Aaron Ridley third and Derek Rainey fourth for the next several laps.
Lap eleven would see Roberts slide high in turn two and allow Ridley and Rainey to get by, sliding Roberts back to fourth.
Ridley and Rainey would battle for second, with Rainey taking over the spot three laps later, with fast mover Jordy Nipper moving up to fourth from his twelfth place starting spot.
The top four would hold their own for the rest of the race with Smith coming under the checkers first and claiming the $2,000 payday.
Rainey would finish second with Ridley third. Nipper was fourth with Gary McPherson rounding out the top five.
Jason Smith took the lead on lap eight and led the final twelve laps en route to the win in Limited Latemodel action on Sunday. Rucker Orr who had to go from the point to the back after spinning one lap into the race, rallied for a second place finish with Chris Fennell Third.
Doug Stephens won the Crate Latemodel feature over Alan Brewer in second and Aaron Wilson third.
David Beam rallied from the fourteenth starting spot to claim the win the fifteen lap Econo Bomber feature event with Daniel Brewer in second and Eric Hamby third.
Greg Leford grabbed the lead on lap three and led the final twelve laps to win the Super Bomber feature event. Kirk Atkins finished in second and Timmy Millwood third.
Grady Stokes won the fifteen lap Pony Car feature event after eventual winner Jimmy Plumlee was DQ’D. Benton Morris was second with Jeremy Millsaps third.
James Gagnon won the always exciting Cruiser car feature event with Tim Pittman second and Jeffery Woodall third.
