TONY KNOWLES WINS SLM CHAMPIONSHIP RACE AT ROME
Rome, GA (June 19, 2011) – Tony Knowles grabbed the lead on lap eight and led the final twenty-two laps en route to the SLM Championship Race win at Rome Speedway in Rome, GA on Sunday Night.
Early race leader Aaron Ridley finished in the second spot with Ronnie Johnson third. Robert Gant moved up from twelfth to finish in the fourth spot with Frank Ingram rounding out the top five.
Ridley and Casey Roberts led the field down to the start of the thirty-lap feature event. After two unsuccessful starts, the third time was the charm with Ridley jumping to the point over Roberts and Knowles.
The caution flag would the fall on lap seven, and this set the stage for the Delaware double-file restart.
Knowles used the outside of the track to get by move Ridley and Roberts on the restart and take over the race lead, and lead the final twenty-two laps en route to the win.
In other action, Don Jenkins led all twenty-laps of the Limited Latemodel feature event for the win over Jason Smith in second and Jason Williams third.
Jeremy Ledford grabbed the lead half-way through the Crate Latemodel feature event to pick up the win over Doug Stevens in second and Matt Dooley third.
The Econo Bomber feature was a fierce fifteen laps of racing, with the front six cars side by side and swapping positions lap after lap. John Binger finally grabbed the lead for good with two laps to go to pick up the win over Gooch Spriggs in second and Eric Hamby third.
Willie winsom won the Super Bomber feature event over Richard Bagby in second and Timmy Millwood third.
William Ethridge picked up the win in the twenty-six car Pony car field over Ronnie Faucett in second and Harvey Cunningham third.
Joe Trantham came from ninth to win the always exciting Cruiser car feature event over Jimmy Wilson in second and Tim Pittman in third.
Rome International Speedway will be back in action in just two short weeks on Sunday July 3rd, hosting a hot night of racing and fireworks during their annual 4th of July weekend activities.
